Thai Long Steel Association Calls for Stricter Quality Standards

According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Thai Long Steel Association is urging for an upgrade to the Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) for steel products. Prawit Horrungruang, a committee member of the association, emphasized that the industry must learn from the 1997 economic crisis, which severely impacted the sector due to high capital requirements and market volatility.

Mr. Prawit argued that upgrading standards should not be viewed as a barrier to entry, but rather as a necessary step to ensure consistent quality and safety across all steel products, regardless of the manufacturing technology used, such as Induction Furnaces (IF). He stressed that for materials used in buildings and infrastructure, the focus must remain on the final product's quality and safety, as these directly affect public well-being.

This push for higher standards comes ahead of a public hearing scheduled for August 17, where a new draft of steel standards will be discussed. For residents and those involved in construction or property development in Thailand, this development is significant as it aims to standardize safety protocols for structural materials. It remains to be confirmed how the proposed changes will be implemented and what specific impact they will have on the cost and availability of steel products in the local market.
