Freedom Beach Temporarily Closed Following Safety Concerns
Thai authorities have temporarily closed Freedom Beach in Phuket to ensure visitor safety during the monsoon season following a recent water-related incident.
Freedom Beach, located in the Karon sub-district of Phuket, has been temporarily closed to the public. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin ordered the closure following a water-related incident on August 10, 2026, involving a German tourist who went missing in the area.
Minister Suchart emphasized that the decision is a preventive measure to protect lives and property during the monsoon season. The Andaman coast is currently experiencing strong winds and high waves, with some areas reporting swells reaching two to three meters or higher. The Ministry has instructed the Royal Forest Department to heighten safety protocols at the site, which is situated within the Nakkerd Hill National Forest Reserve.
Nikorn Sirirojananon, Director-General of the Royal Forest Department, has tasked local officials, including the head of the Freedom Beach Recreation Forest, with enforcing the closure. The official order, signed on August 11, 2026, restricts both access to the beach and swimming activities to mitigate risks associated with the current weather conditions.
For travelers and residents, this means the beach is currently off-limits. It remains to be confirmed how long the closure will remain in effect, as it depends on the progression of the monsoon weather patterns and the implementation of enhanced safety measures by the authorities.
