Cardiologist Issues Health Warning Following HYROX Competition Incident
A sports cardiologist has advised HYROX participants to monitor their health closely after a recent medical emergency occurred during a competition.
Following a recent incident where a participant required emergency resuscitation and hospitalization during a HYROX event, Dr. Akanis Srisukwattana, a specialist in sports cardiology, has issued a public advisory for athletes. The incident was highlighted by the 'Ploy Talk' social media page, which shared images of the medical intervention.
Dr. Akanis noted that while the statistical risk of cardiac arrest during sports is generally estimated at one in 100,000, this figure increases to approximately one in 5,000 for individuals over the age of 50 or those with underlying health conditions. The cardiologist emphasized that athletes should be vigilant for physical warning signs and must stop immediately and alert on-site medical teams if they experience distress.
For residents and visitors participating in high-intensity fitness competitions in Thailand, this serves as a reminder of the importance of physical screening. Dr. Akanis clarified that there is currently insufficient data to determine if HYROX carries a higher mortality risk compared to running or other endurance sports. It remains to be confirmed whether specific environmental factors or individual health profiles contributed to this particular case. Participants are encouraged to consult with medical professionals regarding their personal fitness levels before engaging in strenuous athletic activities.
