EGAT and IEAT Partner to Launch EV Battery Recycling Hub in EEC

According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has unveiled a strategic plan to manage used electric vehicle (EV) batteries to prevent future hazardous waste issues. As part of this initiative, EGAT is partnering with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) to develop a 'Circular' industrial estate within the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

This project aims to create a comprehensive management system for spent batteries. The process involves initial sorting, followed by the extraction of critical minerals for reuse. These materials will then be repurposed to manufacture new batteries or large-scale power banks. EGAT has designated its Wang Noi power plant as a pilot site for these recycling operations.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this development signals a proactive approach to environmental sustainability as the country transitions toward widespread EV adoption. By establishing a domestic recycling infrastructure, Thailand aims to mitigate the long-term environmental impact of battery waste. While the plan outlines a clear framework for circular management, specific timelines for the full-scale operation of the EEC facility and the projected capacity of the recycling plant remain to be confirmed by the involved authorities.
