Government Proposes Agricultural Restructuring to Boost High-Value Crops

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 14, 2026, Kobsak Pootrakool, chairman of the working group on agricultural products and food security, has announced a new strategy to restructure Thailand's agricultural sector. The initiative, discussed during the group's inaugural meeting, aims to move farmers away from crops that consistently result in financial losses and instead focus on high-value agricultural products.
The plan involves a multi-stage approach covering the entire supply chain. Key measures include partnering with the private sector to establish better market access for producers nationwide, investing in plant research, and promoting agricultural innovation. Additionally, the government is looking to scale up small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to help them compete with the influx of foreign goods, including the implementation of 'SME-GP' policies to provide competitive advantages for local businesses.
For residents and travelers, this shift could eventually lead to changes in the availability and pricing of local produce and processed goods. While these proposals are part of a 'Quick Win' and 'Big Win' policy framework directed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supajee Suthumpun, many details remain to be confirmed.
