Man Arrested for Impersonating Utility Official to Extort Money
Authorities in Thailand have apprehended a 58-year-old man accused of posing as an electricity official to scam residents out of money.
On August 13, 2026, officials in Chum Phae District, Khon Kaen, announced the arrest of a 58-year-old man, identified as Chanwit, for allegedly impersonating a utility worker to commit theft. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the suspect was apprehended in Phu Khiao District, Chaiyaphum, while attempting to flee on a motorcycle.
Authorities state that the suspect targeted residents by claiming to be an employee of the Provincial Electricity Authority or the waterworks department. He would demand payment for supposed outstanding utility bills, threatening to disconnect services if victims refused to pay. In one reported incident on August 11, a 23-year-old woman was allegedly targeted for a payment of 1,570 baht. The suspect reportedly admitted to consuming alcohol before committing these acts to bolster his confidence. Officials noted that the suspect had allegedly operated across two provinces.
For residents and travelers, this incident serves as a reminder to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent utility companies. Official personnel typically carry proper identification and do not demand immediate cash payments at the door under threat of service disconnection. While the suspect is in custody, the full extent of his activities across other regions remains subject to ongoing investigation by local police.
