NACC Investigates High-Cost Gym Equipment in Saraburi Municipal Centers
Thailand's anti-corruption agency is reviewing public spending at two Saraburi health centers after discovering expensive fitness equipment, including treadmills priced at 880,000 THB each.
On August 13, 2026, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) conducted an inspection of two public health and fitness centers in Saraburi province: the Sa Laeng Phan Subdistrict Municipality center and the Muak Lek Municipality center. The investigation, led by NACC Deputy Secretary-General Kiattisak Phutphan, focused on the transparency of high-budget public projects.
During the site visit, officials noted the presence of high-end fitness equipment, specifically treadmills valued at 880,000 THB per unit. These facilities, which are air-conditioned and offer free access to the public, serve an average of 40 to 50 users daily, primarily retirees. The Saraburi Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) oversaw the construction, procurement of equipment, and the hiring of staff, including trainers and security personnel, before transferring management to local authorities.
For residents and visitors, these centers represent significant public investments in local wellness infrastructure. The Muak Lek municipal clerk stated that monthly operational costs, including staffing, amount to approximately 70,000 THB, and confirmed that maintenance budgets have been allocated. While the NACC is currently monitoring the expenditure to ensure fiscal responsibility, it remains to be confirmed whether the procurement processes for these high-value items will face further formal scrutiny or if the current operational model will be adjusted following the NACC's review.
