Laos Repatriates 130 Thai Nationals Involved in Online Gambling Operations
Thai authorities have received 130 citizens from Laos following a crackdown on illegal online gambling networks operating out of Vientiane.
On August 13, 2026, Thai officials, including representatives from the Nong Khai Immigration Bureau and the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane, received 130 Thai nationals repatriated by Laotian authorities. According to Khaosod Online, these individuals were apprehended during a raid on illegal online gambling and scamming operations based in the capital city of Vientiane, where they had been renting rooms to conduct their activities.
Upon their return to Thailand via the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai, the group underwent screening by a multidisciplinary team at the Nong Khai Territorial Defense Volunteer Company. Initial findings indicated that none of the individuals were victims of human trafficking or forced labor, and no outstanding arrest warrants were identified among the group.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the ongoing regional efforts to dismantle cross-border cybercrime networks. While the immediate processing of these individuals has concluded, the broader investigation into the leadership and financial backers of these gambling syndicates remains ongoing.
