Thai Business Confidence Hits Three-Year Low in July
The Thai Chamber of Commerce reports that business confidence has reached its lowest point in 35 months, citing weak purchasing power and economic stagnation.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) announced that the business confidence index for July 2026 stood at 41.5. While this represents a marginal increase of 0.1 points from the previous month, it marks the lowest level recorded in 35 months. Thanavath Phonvichai, President of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, attributed this trend to a sluggish economic recovery and lackluster tourism growth.
For residents and business owners, the report highlights several challenges: fragile purchasing power due to stagnant incomes, high household debt, and increased competition from foreign goods and businesses, particularly in the retail and restaurant sectors. Furthermore, rising production costs—specifically electricity and fuel—are squeezing profit margins and complicating access to credit. Looking ahead, most entrepreneurs surveyed expect economic conditions to remain difficult through the end of the year across sectors including agriculture, trade, and industry.
Conversely, the consumer confidence index showed a slight improvement for the second consecutive month, rising from 50.7 to 51.8, supported by the 'Thai Helps Thai Plus' initiative and stabilizing agricultural prices. While this provides a glimmer of hope for local consumption, the overall economic outlook remains cautious. It remains to be confirmed how long these inflationary pressures will persist and whether government interventions will be sufficient to stimulate a broader recovery before the year concludes.
