Thai Shooting Sports Associations Express Concern Over New Gun Control Directives

According to a report by Khaosod Online, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed the cabinet to implement stringent gun control measures, including a potential total ban on transporting firearms outside of homes, with no exceptions for professional athletes. This directive has caused significant alarm among the shooting sports community, as athletes rely on regular practice to maintain their competitive edge.

Yuttana Phanitphithetwong, President of the Clay Target Shooting Association of Thailand, and Chalitrat Chantharubeksa, Secretary-General of the Thailand Practical Shooting Association, expressed their concerns regarding the impact on national athletes. They clarified that competitive shooters do not 'carry' firearms in public; rather, they transport disassembled, locked firearms in vehicle trunks directly to authorized shooting ranges. With major competitions like the Asian Games approaching, athletes fear that these restrictions will prevent necessary training and potentially lead to legal complications.
