The Governor of Surat Thani has clarified that a shotgun displayed as a raffle prize at a local event was merely a symbolic prop, with the actual prize being cash.
Following public criticism regarding a raffle prize at a 134th-anniversary celebration for village headmen in Koh Phangan, Surat Thani, provincial authorities have issued a clarification. Images circulating on social media showed a shotgun being presented as a prize during the event held on August 10, 2026, at the Koh Phangan District Office grounds, sparking questions about the appropriateness of such an award at a government-sanctioned gathering.
Surat Thani Governor Jumpot Wannachatsiri stated that the firearm displayed was only a symbolic representation. According to the Governor, the actual prize awarded to the winner was a cash equivalent. He further noted that the decision to use any prize money to purchase a firearm remains at the sole discretion of the recipient. The event, which was attended by local officials, police, and community members, was intended to celebrate the anniversary of the village headman system.
