Sawaeng Bunmee Retained as Election Commission Secretary-General
The Election Commission of Thailand has voted to retain Sawaeng Bunmee as Secretary-General until March 2027 following a performance review.
On August 13, 2026, Khaosod Online reported that the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand voted 5 to 2 to approve the performance evaluation of Sawaeng Bunmee, the current Secretary-General. This decision ensures that Sawaeng will remain in his position until his employment contract concludes on March 31, 2027.
The vote follows a period of internal review regarding his performance for the 2025 fiscal year. Previously, the EC had moved to cancel a prior assessment conducted under the leadership of former chairman Ittiporn Boonpracong, which had rated Sawaeng’s performance below the 60 percent threshold. Had the commission upheld that earlier assessment, Sawaeng would have been required to vacate his post under the terms of his contract.
For residents and travelers, this development provides continuity within the administrative body responsible for overseeing electoral processes in Thailand. While the leadership of the EC secretariat is now settled through early 2027, the internal procedural shifts regarding performance evaluations highlight the evolving nature of institutional oversight within the commission.
