Thai Government Tightens Gun Control Measures Following School Shooting

Following a shooting incident at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where a student used a firearm to attack teachers and peers, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed government agencies to implement stricter gun control measures. According to Khaosod Online, the government is prioritizing both immediate actions and long-term legislative reforms to prevent illegal firearms from circulating.

Immediate measures include the suspension of new welfare gun programs and the halting of all new firearm purchase permits (P.3) until further notice. Authorities are also conducting nationwide audits of existing permits, firearm dealers, and ammunition stocks at shooting ranges, alongside a crackdown on illegal weapons. For the long term, the government plans to propose amendments to the Firearms Act within 60 days, aiming to digitize the licensing process and integrate data with customs and revenue departments to enhance oversight.

For residents and travelers, these changes signify a period of heightened scrutiny regarding firearm regulations in Thailand. While the government has emphasized a strict moratorium on new purchases, the impact on daily life remains limited to administrative and regulatory shifts.
