Thai Government Plans Stricter Firearm Control Legislation

On August 12, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapan announced plans to overhaul Thailand’s outdated 1947 Firearms Act. According to Khaosod Online, the government intends to consult with the Department of Provincial Administration and the Council of State to transition from the current analog, paper-based permit system to a comprehensive digital framework.

This proposed modernization aims to track firearms throughout their entire lifecycle, from initial import and inventory management at dealerships to individual ownership and transfers. Officials noted that the current system lacks integration between regulators and retailers, making oversight difficult. Potential measures under consideration include requiring license renewals every three years and adopting stricter verification protocols similar to international banking standards.

For residents and long-term visitors, these discussions signal a potential shift toward more rigorous regulatory oversight of firearm possession in Thailand. Because amending the primary legislation is a time-consuming process, the government is considering issuing ministerial regulations as an interim measure to expedite implementation.
