Global Automotive Sales Rankings Shift as Chinese Brands Rise

Toyota maintains its global lead in vehicle sales, while Chinese manufacturers make significant gains, pushing established brands like Honda and Suzuki out of the top ten.

According to a report from Khaosod Online published on August 12, 2026, the global automotive market is undergoing a notable transformation. Toyota continues to hold the top position worldwide, with sales reaching approximately 5.4 million units, followed by Volkswagen.

However, the rankings reveal a surge in the influence of Chinese automakers. BYD has climbed to the sixth position globally, while Geely currently holds the seventh spot. Notably, Chery has entered the top ten for the first time, sharing the ninth position with Ford. Conversely, the report highlights a surprising decline for Japanese manufacturers, with both Honda and Suzuki falling out of the top ten list of highest-selling global automotive brands.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this shift reflects the changing landscape of the automotive industry, which may influence future vehicle availability, service networks, and market competition within the country. As Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles become more prevalent on global roads, consumers may see a broader range of options in local showrooms. It remains to be confirmed how these global sales trends will specifically impact the long-term market share and pricing strategies of these brands within the Thai domestic market.
