State Railway of Thailand Approves 120 Billion Baht Southern Double-Track Project
The State Railway of Thailand has greenlit a 120 billion baht expansion for three southern double-track rail routes, aiming for construction to begin in July 2027.
According to Prachachat Business, the board of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has officially approved a major infrastructure project to develop three double-track rail routes in the southern region. The project, valued at approximately 120 billion baht, covers a total distance of 534 kilometers, stretching from Chumphon through Surat Thani and Hat Yai, ending at Padang Besar.
SRT Deputy Governor Anan Phonimdaeng stated that the proposal is scheduled to be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration later this year. If approved, the bidding process is expected to take place in 2027, with construction slated to commence in July of that same year.
For residents and travelers, this development is significant as it aims to modernize rail connectivity in the south, potentially increasing efficiency and capacity for both passenger and freight transport. However, the project remains in the planning phase. While the SRT board has reached a decision, the final implementation depends on formal Cabinet approval and the successful completion of the bidding process.
