UN Report Highlights Escalating Use of Paramotors and Drones in Myanmar Conflict
A UN investigative body reports that the Myanmar military is increasingly using low-cost aircraft, including paramotors and drones, to conduct lethal airstrikes against civilians.
According to a report by the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), established by the UN Human Rights Council, the Myanmar military has intensified its use of affordable aerial technology to target civilians amidst ongoing conflict. The IIMM notes that these tactics include the use of paramotors, small helicopters, and drones to drop unguided bombs at low altitudes.
Reports from the Arakan Army indicate that between August 1 and August 11, at least 20 villagers were killed and 22 injured across three townships in Rakhine State due to these airstrikes. Investigators highlighted a disturbing pattern of 'double-tap' strikes, where the military attacks a location, then strikes again to target emergency responders and civilians attempting to flee. Beyond aerial attacks, the IIMM documented instances of arbitrary detention, torture, and sexual violence.
