Thai Prime Minister Clarifies Stricter Stance on Firearm Possession
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reiterated that carrying firearms is prohibited for all, including politicians, citing the expiration of all carry permits in Thailand.
On August 12, 2026, Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the media at Sanam Luang regarding the regulation of firearms. Following instructions given to members of the Bhumjaithai Party, the Prime Minister emphasized that carrying firearms is currently prohibited for everyone in Thailand, as all existing carry permits have expired.
Anutin stressed that public figures, particularly politicians and those seeking office, must serve as role models. He warned that being found in possession of a firearm could lead to legal consequences and potential ethical violations, which could jeopardize their political careers. Regarding concerns over self-defense, the Prime Minister clarified that his previous remarks about shooting intruders were intended to highlight the inherent dangers of firearm use rather than to establish a new policy.
