The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 2,000 deaths, with health officials warning that the virus is spreading at an unprecedented rate.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached a critical stage. As of August 12, 2026, confirmed cases have risen to at least 4,381, with 2,011 fatalities. An additional 704 patients are currently receiving treatment or are under quarantine.
Health authorities describe this as the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record. While the official declaration of the epidemic was made on May 15, genetic analysis suggests the virus began circulating as early as February 2026. The severity of the situation is highlighted by the rapid increase in mortality: while it took nine weeks to reach the first 1,000 deaths, the toll doubled to 2,000 in just three weeks. This trajectory indicates that the health crisis is currently outpacing containment and contact-tracing efforts.
This event is now the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history, surpassed only by the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic. For travelers and residents, this situation underscores the importance of monitoring official health advisories and maintaining awareness of regional disease outbreaks. While the DRC continues to implement containment measures, such as the recent quarantine of nearly 200 passengers on a vessel, the full extent of the virus's reach remains a subject of ongoing investigation by international health agencies.
