Thailand Prepares for Annual Perseids Meteor Shower
The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) invites the public to observe the Perseids meteor shower on the night of August 12.
According to Khaosod Online, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) has announced that the Perseids meteor shower, often referred to as the 'Mother’s Day meteor shower,' will be visible across the country. Suparerk Karuehanon, Assistant Director of NARIT, stated that the phenomenon is expected to peak from the night of August 12 until the early morning of August 13, 2026.
The radiant point for the meteors is located in the Perseus constellation, which is expected to rise above the northeastern horizon around 11:00 PM on August 12. Experts anticipate an average rate of approximately 100 meteors per hour. Because there will be no moonlight interference this year, conditions are considered ideal for observation.
For residents and travelers, NARIT recommends choosing a location away from city lights or areas with minimal light pollution to ensure the best viewing experience. The institute suggests that the most effective way to observe the event is by lying down and viewing the sky with the naked eye in the direction of the radiant point. While the phenomenon is expected to be visible nationwide, the ability to witness the display remains dependent on local weather conditions, specifically the presence of clear, cloudless skies. As of now, the visibility of the event is subject to local atmospheric clarity.
