Department of Internal Trade Addresses Egg Supply Concerns in Thailand
Thai authorities have dismissed rumors of egg shortages caused by exports, launching a price-relief initiative to ensure market stability.
The Thai Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has officially addressed concerns regarding the domestic egg supply, dismissing rumors that exports are causing local shortages. According to Khaosod Online, DIT Director-General Withayakorn Maneenetr confirmed that while production has seen a temporary decline, current supplies remain sufficient to meet public demand.
To mitigate the impact on the cost of living, the DIT has launched the 'Thai Eggs Help Thais' project. From August 13 to August 31, 2026, eggs will be sold at approximately 10% below market prices at participating locations nationwide. The department is also collaborating with wholesale and retail chains to offer promotional pricing and ensure consistent distribution across all provinces.
For residents and travelers, this initiative aims to stabilize prices and prevent localized scarcity. In areas like Nakhon Ratchasima, where specific complaints were reported, provincial commerce offices have been dispatched to monitor the situation and source additional stock from alternative producers to ensure availability.
While the government maintains that the supply is adequate, the DIT continues to monitor market conditions closely to ensure fair pricing. It remains to be seen how long the temporary production dip will persist and whether further interventions will be required beyond the end of August to maintain price stability.
