Public Health Campaign Addresses HPV Misconceptions in Thailand
The Thai Red Cross and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have launched a campaign to combat myths surrounding HPV, as cervical cancer remains a significant health concern.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Thai Red Cross Society’s Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have launched the 'HPV Mai Pen Rai Mai Dai' (HPV: It’s Not Okay to Ignore) campaign. The initiative aims to correct widespread misconceptions about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which remains a critical public health issue in Thailand.
Data cited in the report indicates that one Thai woman dies from cervical cancer every two hours. A major barrier to prevention is the common belief that a lack of symptoms equates to a lack of risk. Experts emphasize that HPV is a common virus affecting all genders and can remain dormant in the body for 15 to 20 years before potentially developing into various types of cancer.
To raise awareness, the campaign hosted an event at Lumphini Park on August 5, featuring public figures like Amy Klinpratoom, who shared her personal experience with the virus. For residents and travelers, this highlights the importance of understanding that HPV is not limited to specific demographics and that asymptomatic status does not guarantee health. While the campaign focuses on education and prevention, it remains to be confirmed how these awareness efforts will impact long-term vaccination rates and screening participation across the country.
