Thailand to Implement New Checked Baggage Screening Protocols in October
Starting 16 October 2026, Thailand will adopt updated security procedures for checked luggage, allowing authorities to open suspicious bags without passenger presence.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Newsroom, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is set to introduce revised checked baggage screening procedures effective 16 October 2026. Under these new protocols, security personnel are authorized to open suspicious luggage for inspection even if the passenger is not present. To ensure transparency, these inspections will be conducted under controlled conditions and will be video-recorded, with passengers receiving notification after the process is complete.
For travellers and residents, this change necessitates careful preparation before arriving at the airport. The CAAT advises passengers to utilize TSA-compatible locks to prevent potential damage to luggage during these inspections.
