Unlicensed Taxi Driver Fined Following Overcharging Incident in Ubon Ratchathani
An unlicensed taxi driver has been fined and suspended after overcharging a Lao passenger at the Ubon Ratchathani bus terminal.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, an unlicensed taxi driver has faced disciplinary action after a viral social media post exposed an overcharging incident at the Ubon Ratchathani bus terminal. The incident involved a Lao content creator who reported being intimidated into paying an exorbitant fare for a trip to the Chong Mek border crossing in Sirindhorn District.
Initially, the driver demanded 4,500 baht for the approximately 94-kilometer journey, though the passenger managed to negotiate the price down to 3,600 baht. Following the public outcry, the 32-year-old driver, identified as Mr. Satcha, reported to the Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station on August 11, 2026. He admitted to the charges and has since returned the 3,600 baht to the passenger. Authorities have imposed a 2,000-baht fine and issued a temporary suspension of his personal driving license.
For travelers and residents, this incident highlights the risks associated with using unregistered transport services at major transit hubs. While the driver has been penalized, it remains to be confirmed what further measures the Department of Land Transport will implement to prevent similar predatory practices at the Ubon Ratchathani bus terminal.
