On August 10, 2026, caretakers at the Saentrakul Elephant House in the Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai initiated emergency safety protocols due to rising water levels in the Mae Taeng River. According to a report by Khaosod Online, the river’s water volume began to increase again after a brief period of recession that had previously allowed for site restoration efforts.
To ensure the safety of the animals, all elephants have been relocated to a designated high-altitude area known as 'Noen Lop Chang' (Elephant Evacuation Hill). Additionally, staff have moved valuable equipment and property to secure locations to mitigate potential flood damage. The sanctuary has implemented a 24-hour monitoring system to track water levels and weather patterns, particularly as rain clouds were observed over the district with forecasts indicating potential rainfall in the evening.
For travelers and residents in the Mae Taeng area, this situation highlights the ongoing risk of flash flooding during the rainy season.
