Thai Government Proposes Nine-Point Plan to Manage Water Risks in Isan

Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri recently announced that the Thai government is preparing to submit a nine-point water management plan to the Cabinet. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of floods and droughts across 20 provinces in the Isan (Northeast) region. According to Khaosod Online, the plan focuses on learning from past challenges, specifically by improving emergency shelters and streamlining compensation processes for residents in high-risk areas.

The strategy emphasizes a dual approach: managing excess water during flood seasons and addressing shortages during dry periods. Proposed solutions include the creation of 'monkey cheek' (kaem ling) water retention areas to store excess water for later use. However, the implementation faces logistical hurdles, particularly regarding the disposal of soil excavated during dredging projects, which is currently classified as state property. Local authorities have expressed difficulty in managing these projects due to strict regulations surrounding the removal of this soil.

For residents and travelers in the Northeast, this plan signals a proactive shift in regional disaster preparedness. While the government is coordinating with local agencies to ensure readiness, the proposal is still awaiting formal Cabinet approval.
