Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy Proposes New Cybersecurity Measures
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is set to propose mandatory multi-factor authentication and password resets for government systems following reports of widespread data leaks.
On August 10, 2026, Chaiyot Chidchob, Minister of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), announced that the ministry will present a new cybersecurity proposal to the Cabinet on August 11, 2026. According to Khaosod Online, the initiative aims to curb data leaks by mandating the use of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) across government agencies and enforcing urgent password resets for state systems.
MDES data indicates that approximately 200 million login credentials associated with Thailand have been compromised globally, with 30,000 government systems and over 35,000 private sector systems identified as having leaked data. The Ministry clarified that these figures represent historical data accumulated in various databases and the Dark Web, rather than active, ongoing breaches. The Minister emphasized that recent reports of data leaks were not the result of a direct system hack.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights an ongoing effort to secure digital infrastructure in Thailand. While the proposed measures focus on government systems, the scale of the identified leaks underscores the importance of personal digital hygiene.
