Thai Interior Ministry Orders Stricter Gun Control Measures

On August 10, 2026, Permanent Secretary for the Interior, Mr. Ardsith Sumpunrat, announced that the Thai government has ordered a nationwide crackdown on firearm possession. This directive follows recent violent incidents involving registered firearms, including a shooting involving the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization President.

In response, the Ministry has instructed local administrative officials and police to collaborate on establishing checkpoints to detect illegal or unauthorized weapons. Mr. Ardsith emphasized that the Prime Minister has effectively halted the issuance of new carry permits (P.12 licenses), meaning that any individual found carrying a firearm in public is now subject to immediate arrest.
