Student Targeted in Online Extortion Scam

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 10, 2026, a 23-year-old student sought assistance from the 'Saimai Tong Rod' organization after falling victim to an online extortion scheme. The victim, who was seeking financial support for housing, encountered an individual on social media posing as a wealthy benefactor offering payment for companionship via video calls.

During the calls, the perpetrator pressured the student to perform explicit acts. After the victim refused certain requests, the scammer blocked contact. Two days later, the victim was alerted that recordings of the private calls had been leaked and shared on a third-party platform, accompanied by personal information and links to gambling websites. The victim reported that other individuals, including public figures, have allegedly been targeted by similar schemes.

For residents and visitors, this incident highlights the significant risks associated with engaging in private digital interactions with unknown individuals online. Scammers often use promises of financial assistance to exploit vulnerable people. It remains to be confirmed how many victims have been affected in total and whether the Cyber Police have successfully identified the perpetrator. Authorities are currently investigating the case to track down the individual responsible for the distribution of the illicit content.
