On August 10, 2026, Khaosod Online Thailand reported that the Mekong River is nearing critical levels in Nakhon Phanom province. This surge follows a week of heavy rainfall and a month of accumulated precipitation, compounded by water runoff from upstream areas including Laos, Loei, Nong Khai, and Bueng Kan.
The rising water has inundated 20 shops located beneath the Naga monument plaza, with floodwaters reaching depths of 20 to 30 centimeters. Business owners, including those operating restaurants, clothing stores, and souvenir shops, have been scrambling to relocate equipment such as refrigerators and furniture to higher ground. Additionally, the Sawan Chai Khong road has been submerged under 1.5 meters of water.
For travelers and residents, this situation necessitates caution near the riverfront, as local authorities are currently monitoring six districts for potential overflow from river tributaries. While the immediate impact is concentrated on the waterfront commercial zone, the situation remains fluid. It is not yet confirmed how long the water levels will remain elevated or if further infrastructure, such as local roads or additional tourist facilities, will face closures.
