Ratchaburi’s Signature Produce Awarded GI Status
The Department of Intellectual Property has officially registered 'Paen Damnoen Saduak Lime' and 'Ratchaburi Nam Dok Mai Mango' as Geographical Indication (GI) products.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Intellectual Property has officially granted Geographical Indication (GI) status to two new agricultural products from Ratchaburi province: the 'Paen Damnoen Saduak Lime' and the 'Ratchaburi Nam Dok Mai Mango.'
Director-General Oramon Sapthaweetham stated that this initiative aligns with the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supachai Sutumpun, which aims to utilize intellectual property to increase the value of local Thai goods. By securing GI status, the government intends to enhance the global competitiveness of these products, boost local farmers' incomes, and emphasize the unique identity and quality of Ratchaburi’s agricultural output. This addition brings the total number of GI-registered products in Ratchaburi to eight, joining items such as the famous Ratchaburi dragon jars.
For residents and travelers, this designation serves as a quality assurance mark, identifying authentic local produce that adheres to specific regional standards. While this registration is expected to generate significant economic value—estimated at 8.5 billion baht—it remains to be seen how this branding will influence retail pricing and availability in local markets. Consumers can look for the GI label to ensure they are purchasing authentic, high-quality produce directly linked to the unique geography of the Ratchaburi region.
