Counterfeit 1,000 Baht Banknotes Reported in Phakhi Market

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 10, 2026, vendors at the Phakhi fresh market in Chaiyaphum province have raised concerns regarding the circulation of counterfeit 1,000 baht banknotes. Within a single week, two local merchants have reportedly fallen victim to this scam, resulting in the loss of both merchandise and change.

One merchant, a 59-year-old sausage seller named Chai, described an encounter with a man approximately 170 centimeters tall with a medium-dark complexion. The individual allegedly purchased 100 baht worth of sausages using a 1,000 baht note, receiving 900 baht in change. Upon closer inspection after the customer had departed, Chai discovered the note lacked the security watermarks characteristic of genuine currency. By the time the forgery was identified, the suspect had already left the area.

This situation serves as a reminder for residents and travelers in the region to exercise caution when handling large-denomination banknotes. While these incidents are currently localized to the Phakhi market, vendors are urging local authorities to investigate the matter to prevent further financial losses. At this time, it remains to be confirmed whether these incidents are linked to a larger organized operation or if the suspect is acting alone.
