Thailand Weather Alert: Heavy Rains and Rough Seas Expected
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across Thailand and high waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand due to a strong southwest monsoon.
According to the Thai Meteorological Department, a monsoon trough currently spans the upper North and Laos, extending toward a low-pressure cell in the Gulf of Tonkin. This system, combined with a rather strong southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea and Thailand, is expected to bring isolated heavy rains across the country. The North and Northeast regions are specifically noted as areas where very heavy rainfall is possible.
For those near the coast, the weather conditions are creating significant maritime hazards. The department reports that winds are driving waves in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand to heights of 2–3 meters, with waves exceeding 3 meters in areas experiencing thundershowers.
Regarding regional weather, Typhoon “DOLPHIN,” currently located over the East China Sea near Okinawa, Japan, is projected to make landfall in Zhejiang, China, between August 9 and 10, 2026. Officials have confirmed that this storm is not expected to enter Thailand.
Travelers and residents are advised to monitor local weather forecasts closely before planning trips, as conditions can change rapidly. While the path of the typhoon is clear, the impact of the monsoon trough and the resulting sea conditions remain the primary concerns for the immediate future.
