Wat Phra Mahathat Named UNESCO World Heritage Site
Nakhon Si Thammarat celebrates the official UNESCO recognition of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, marked by a grand performance of nearly 1,000 Nora dancers.
On July 25, 2026, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, UNESCO officially designated Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat as a World Heritage site. This marks Thailand’s sixth cultural World Heritage site and the first in the southern region.
To commemorate this milestone, the Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Administrative Organization hosted a grand celebration at the temple. The event featured a massive performance by nearly 1,000 Nora dancers, who showcased 12 traditional movements, including the 'Mae Lai' (Kanok pattern), 'Rahu Chap Chan' (buffalo horn), and 'Kinnara' (mythical bird) poses. This performance was particularly symbolic as it united two of Thailand’s UNESCO-recognized treasures: the newly inscribed temple and the Nora performing art, which was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021.
