Thailand to Open New M6 Motorway Section for Weekend Travel
The Department of Highways will open a 110-kilometer stretch of the M6 motorway between Bang Pa-In and Pak Chong for free weekend use starting August 21, 2026.
According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Highways has announced the opening of a new 110-kilometer section of the M6 motorway, connecting Bang Pa-In to Pak Chong. This initiative, part of a 'Quick-Win' policy directed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, aims to improve connectivity between the Bangkok metropolitan area and Nakhon Ratchasima.
Starting August 21, 2026, motorists will be able to use this section free of charge every weekend. The route will be accessible from 12:00 PM on Fridays until midnight on Sundays. This expansion complements the existing operational section between Pak Chong and Korat, effectively allowing for a continuous journey from Bang Pa-In to Nakhon Ratchasima.
For residents and travelers, this development is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion during peak weekend travel periods. By providing a more direct route, the Department of Highways hopes to facilitate smoother transit for those heading toward the Northeast.
While this trial offers immediate relief for weekend commuters, several details remain to be confirmed. The Department of Highways has stated that the long-term goal is to eventually open the entire M6 route for 24-hour service, but a specific timeline for full, permanent operation has not yet been finalized.
