Ancient City Wall Discovered in Nakhon Ratchasima
Archaeologists in Nakhon Ratchasima have unearthed a previously unknown section of an ancient city wall, now being developed as a potential historical landmark.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, archaeologists conducting excavations in Nakhon Ratchasima have discovered a significant section of an ancient city wall. The find is located near the 'Phon Lan' area in the city municipality, approximately 200 meters from a previous 2024 excavation site where human remains, pottery, and gold ornaments dating back 1,500 to 2,500 years were found.
This new discovery, which features a wall section enveloped by a Bodhi tree, provides physical evidence of the city's historical foundations that were not identified in earlier surveys. The excavation, which began on July 20, 2026, involved a 2x10 meter trench that revealed ancient brickwork.
For residents and travelers, this site offers a glimpse into the deep history of the region. Researchers from Silpakorn University are currently analyzing the brick samples at institutions in the United States and Kasetsart University to determine the exact age of the structure. This data is intended to help establish a comprehensive historical timeline for Nakhon Ratchasima. While the site is being considered for development as a historical landmark, the exact age of the wall and its full extent remain subject to ongoing laboratory analysis and further archaeological investigation.
