Ancient Bronze Drums Discovered in Chumphon Province
Local residents in Phato District have unearthed ancient bronze drums along a canal bank, prompting calls for the Fine Arts Department to intervene for preservation.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, independent scholar Wara Chantmanee has urged the Fine Arts Department to secure and restore ancient bronze drums discovered by villagers along the bank of the Phato Canal in Chumphon Province. The artifacts were revealed after soil erosion exposed the site.
Phra Palad Prasit Thanawuttho, the abbot of Wat Ban Homong, reported that the items are currently being stored at the temple. In addition to the two drums—one largely intact and one fragmented—the site contained human remains, beads, a pedestal tray, and a water vessel. Experts suggest this may represent a secondary burial ritual, distinct from other historical findings in Phetchaburi Province where drums were interred directly with the deceased.
For residents and visitors, this discovery highlights the rich archaeological heritage of the Chumphon region. However, the artifacts are currently at risk of further deterioration due to improper storage conditions and exposure to elements like oil. The local community is awaiting official intervention from the Fine Arts Department to ensure the items are professionally preserved. While the historical significance of the site is clear, the exact age of the drums and the full scope of the burial site remain to be confirmed by official archaeological assessment.
