Visakha Bucha 2027

Thailand's most sacred Buddhist holiday commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha, featuring nationwide temple ceremonies and a 24-hour alcohol sales ban.

Visakha Bucha is the most significant day in the Thai Buddhist calendar, marking the birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana of the Buddha. On 20 May 2027, temples across Thailand will host merit-making activities, including alms-giving at dawn and Dhamma talks. In the evening, the traditional 'wian thian' ceremony takes place, where participants walk clockwise three times around the temple's main hall carrying candles, incense, and lotus flowers. Visitors are welcome to observe respectfully; modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required. Please note that a nationwide 24-hour ban on alcohol sales is in effect, with limited exceptions for licensed hotels and specific tourist zones.
