An intense nine-day Taoist purification festival in Phuket featuring street processions, spirit mediums, and traditional jay food.
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, is a significant Taoist event held annually in October. Devotees observe a strict vegetarian diet (jay food) and participate in purification rituals, including fire walking and street processions featuring spirit mediums in trance. The festival is a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visitors are welcome to observe, provided they follow local etiquette, such as wearing white and showing respect at shrines. Specific dates for 2027 are yet to be announced by the organizers.
