Makha Bucha Day 2027

A sacred Buddhist holiday in Thailand featuring evening candlelit temple processions known as wien thien.

Makha Bucha Day commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 monks to hear the Buddha preach. The highlight for visitors is the wien thien ceremony, where devotees walk clockwise three times around a temple's main chapel carrying a candle, incense, and flowers. The event is observed nationwide at temples, including major sites like Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok and Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai. Participants are advised to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Please note that a nationwide 24-hour alcohol ban is in effect, with limited exceptions for licensed venues.
