Chiang Rai Lantern Festival 2026

A local, community-focused celebration of Loy Krathong and Yi Peng along the Kok River in Chiang Rai, featuring traditional ceremonies, floating krathongs, and sky lanterns.

The Chiang Rai Lantern Festival offers a more intimate, local experience of the traditional Loy Krathong and Yi Peng celebrations compared to larger tourist hubs. Centered on the Kok River waterfront and the municipal park, the event features families releasing krathongs, candlelit wien thien ceremonies at temples like Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Phra Singh, and local food stalls serving northern Thai specialties. Sky lantern releases are permitted in designated areas outside of airport safety zones, subject to annual official regulations. The festival is free to attend in public areas.
