Chak Phra Festival in Surat Thani

An annual cultural festival in Surat Thani featuring traditional land and river processions of Buddha images to mark the end of Buddhist Lent.

The Chak Phra Festival, or 'pulling the Buddha', is a significant cultural event in Surat Thani held annually following the end of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa). The festival features two main processions: decorated floats carrying Buddha images are pulled through the streets by local crowds, while ornate wooden barges carrying monks and sacred images travel along the Tapi River. The barges are traditionally decorated with flowers, lights, and glass. The event also includes traditional long-boat races on the Tapi River. Visitors can observe the religious merit-making ceremonies at local temples and enjoy regional southern Thai cuisine at the night markets.
