Bun Luang and Phi Ta Khon Festival

A unique three-day traditional ghost festival in Dan Sai, Loei Province, featuring masked parades, merit-making, and ancient animist rituals.

The Bun Luang and Phi Ta Khon Festival is an annual event held in Dan Sai, Loei Province. Rooted in the Vessantara Jataka and ancient animist traditions, the festival spans three days. Day 1 involves invoking the river spirit Phra Upakhut. Day 2 features the famous Grand Ghost Parade where participants wear elaborate, hand-painted masks made from sticky rice baskets and coconut palm sheaths. Day 3 is dedicated to Buddhist sermons at Wat Phon Chai. The exact dates for 2027 are determined by a local spirit medium and are expected to fall between mid-June and early July. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
