Asanha Bucha Day 2027
A significant Buddhist holiday marking the Buddha's first sermon, observed nationwide with temple ceremonies and the traditional wien thien candlelit procession.
Asanha Bucha Day commemorates the Buddha's first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, delivered to his first five disciples. It is a major public holiday in Thailand. Devotees visit temples for almsgiving and to listen to Dhamma talks. The evening is marked by the wien thien ceremony, where worshippers walk clockwise three times around the temple's main chapel carrying candles, incense, and flowers. Note that a nationwide 24-hour alcohol sales ban is in effect, with exemptions for licensed hotels and international airport departure areas.
