Koh Phi Phi is small, steep and built almost entirely around tourism, with no cars on the island and a walking-and-longtail-boat transport model. It can work for a short, high-energy stay or seasonal work in hospitality, but its density, pricing and thin service base make it a poor fit for most longer-term relocation plans, families or anyone needing routine healthcare access.
The developed centre and the quieter edges are very different
Tonsai, the main village between the island's two bays, holds most restaurants, shops and nightlife and gets crowded and loud. Loh Dalum and the coastline beyond the village are quieter but still walk-in only, with steps and hills replacing roads. Decide early whether you want to be inside the busy centre or a longer walk from it, since there is no vehicle option to bridge the gap.
Costs run higher than the mainland for what you get
Because everything—food, water, building materials, waste handling—arrives and departs by boat, and because the island runs on tourist pricing, day-to-day costs for housing and basics tend to sit above comparable mainland or larger-island options. Budget a full monthly routine, not a headline room rate, before assuming Phi Phi is affordable for an extended stay.
Healthcare and family logistics are the weak points here
There is only limited clinic-level care on the island; anything serious requires boat transfer to Phuket or Krabi, and that transfer is itself weather-dependent. Steep terrain, no roads and a strongly nightlife-oriented centre also make Phi Phi a difficult choice for families with young children—most who relocate to this area base themselves on Phuket or Krabi and visit rather than live here.
Before choosing Koh Phi Phi Don
- Decide between the busy Tonsai centre and a quieter, farther walk before booking accommodation.
- Price a full month of food, housing and transport rather than a short-stay rate.
- Confirm what the local clinic can treat and what requires a boat transfer to Phuket or Krabi.
- If travelling with children, weigh the lack of roads and steep terrain against a mainland or larger-island base instead.
