One coastline, a few properties
The island's accommodation sits along a single main beach stretch with limited spread, so choosing "an area" mostly means choosing a resort and checking what stands between it and its neighbours. Given how few options exist, contact properties directly to confirm what is genuinely walkable versus boat-only.
Boat access shrinks outside high season
Ferries and speedboats connecting Koh Ngai to the mainland piers are less frequent, and some routes may pause, during the wettest months, and a number of resorts close over the same period. This affects both getting there and what will actually be open once you arrive — confirm both before booking beyond the high season.
No hospital and very limited shopping
Medical care is minimal to non-existent on the island, and there is no real local retail beyond what resorts stock. Bring what you need, plan mainland trips for anything beyond routine restocking, and treat any medical concern beyond the minor as a reason to head to Trang or Krabi.
